Finding your Essays

Important Facts
- When searching for your essay, you need to know the title of the magazine or journal where it was published. These are listed in italics on the handout
- Because these are the notable essays for the year 2006, Every essay was published in the year 2006.
- The authors are listed in all caps
- The library does not own every journal title (i.e. there is no access to Ecotone or Gettysburg Reveiw)

Using the library to find your essays
To find out if you will have access to the periodical/journal/magazine in which your essay or article appeared:
- Go to the OWH Library Home page (http://www.andover.edu/library/home.htm)
- Click on Find a Journal? on the lower left half of the home page.
- Click on Full Text Electronic Journals in the upper right hand cell of the table.
- This tool allows you to search the entire electronic and print collections of Phillips Academy
- In the search box next to "Title Begins with..." , enter the title of the journal/magazine where your essay appears, not the essay title. HIT ENTER Remember, there may not may not be electronic access for more obscure journals.
- If the OWHL has the journal in either electronic or print format, the computer will tell you. Select the electronic resource you want to use or click on Print Holdings.

Electronic Holdings
Most of the titles are available electronically.
- After you use the journal finder, click on the title of the electronic resource '(i.e. Academic OneFile or Literary reference Center) to get a year by year listing of the journal/magazine.
- Find the appropriate year (2006) and the appropriate date where your essay appears. (Each electronic resource is different so it may take a little effort to see where the year is listed)
- Browse through the contents of the issue to find particular essay you want to read.
- Click on the full text options to print out the entire essay for reading.

Print Holdings
- If you click on "Phillips Academy Print and Microform Holdings," you should see the library record for the journal you want. This will tell you how to locate the physical copy of the journal
- You will need to go to the basement and get the hardcopy of the journal/magazine volume.
- The essay you want may be on microfilm. Check with a librarian if that is the case.
