Course Description

Four class periods. Increased use of authentic materials is employed as more sophisticated aspects of language and culture are explored. In particular, students are exposed to the more formal written style of Chinese, which is prevalent in newspapers, on street signs, etc. Pre­requisite: Successful completion of Chinese 300 or Chinese 220.

Get an Overview with Reference Sources


Reference sources give you an overview of your topic. They help you identify key words that will aid you in searching the online catalog and various electronic databases. Also, reference sources often give suggestions for further reading, which can include books, articles or websites. Additionally, check the bibliographies for further information. Remember to use tables of contents, indexes, and cross references to help you locate information.

Delve Deeper with Books and Sources in Other Formats

After getting an overview with reference sources, it is time to start searching the online catalog for books or other materials that focus more specifically on the topic you have chosen. You may try with the following keywords, or subject headings. The computer will look for the keywords or subject headings in the bibliographic record, which contains an item's title, author, subject, and table of contents or item summary.

 Did you know the difference between keyword search and subject search? 
Hint: Subjects can be found at the bottom of an item's record. Simply click on the subject to execute the search.

Find Articles Using Databases

Article databases contain thousands of articles organized and updated frequently by specialists. They can be searched via using keywords, specific journal titles, publishing dates, etc... Information contained in articles can be more specific than book information as well as more up to date. The primary method to access articles from magazines and journals is through databases searching.

Literary Reference Center Literary Reference Center (LRC) is a comprehensive literary reference database, which provides users with a broad spectrum of reference information from antiquity to the present day. LRC contains detailed information on the most studied authors and their works and is an essential resource for public, academic and high school libraries. The Literary Encyclopedia The Literary Encyclopedia is an expanding global literary reference work written by over 1750 specialists from universities around the world, and currently provides over 4200 authoritative profiles of authors, works and literary and historical topics.
