About ARTstor
ARTstor includes over a million images in a constantly growing collection that covers architecture, painting, photography, sculpture, decorative arts and design, as well as archeological and anthropological objects, and visual and material culture more generally. ARTstor's software tools support a wide range of pedagogical and research uses including: viewing and analyzing images through features such as zooming and panning, saving groups of images online for personal or shared uses, and creating and delivering presentations both online and offline.
How Does ARTstor Work?
For detailed information on the basic functionality of ARTstor, please see Using ARTstor for Students.
Using the Offline Image Viewer (OIV)
What is This OIV Exactly and Why Should I Use It?
ARTstor actually provides two types of Image Viewers, one is called their 'online' Image Viewer which pops open when a user is logged in and browsing image thumbnails and would like to see a larger version of the image. More detailed information on using this image viewer can be found at ARTstor for Students. The other called the 'Offline Image Viewer' (or the OIV) is a program the user must download onto their desktop and once installed, works independently from the ARTstor site.
The OIV is available through the ARTstor site and is presentation tool designed specifically for displaying images. Because of this, it has some great features not available in programs such as PowerPoint. Also because it is a stand alone program that lives on your computer, as long as you have your computer (or laptop) you can use the OIV program to present images anywhere in the world.
Another advantage to using the OIV is that when you import images from ARTstor the images remain at the largest resolution that ARTstor has them available. When a user saves ARTstor images to their desktop they are not at the same high resolution that they are when they are being viewed on the ARTstor web application. Using the OIV allows users to take full advantage of the highest resolution of the images that ARTstor provides without needing to be logged into the ARTstor web application.
You may also import your own images to the OIV as well as PowerPoint presentations so that you do not have to replicate work that you may have already done previously.
Downloading the OIV
Log on to you account on ARTstor.
Once logged in, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Download Offline Viewer." Once it is downloaded to your desktop, click on it twice to open the application. You will be required to enter in your account logon the first time you run the program on your computer.
Creating Presentations With the OIV
When you first double click on the OIV icon on your desktop, either after just downloading it or whenever you would like to use it, you will be presented with a dialog box asking you to choose one of the following:
- Create a new presentation from ARTstor images - selecting this will take you to your saved image group folders on the ARTstor site and will allow you to import them into the OIV for a presentation.
- Create a new presentation from my own images - selecting this will take you to your computer's directory and allow you to select your own images to create a presentation in the OIV.
- Open an existing presentation - selecting this will take you to your computer's directory to allow you to open a presentation that has already been created with the OIV.
- Import a PowerPoint presentation - selecting this will take you to your computer's "My Documents" directory where you can select a preexisting PowerPoint presentation to import into the OIV.
If you have opened the OIV and have not selected any of these options, you may still create a presentation using any of the above methods. Simply go to the "File" menu and select "New" and the same dialog box will appear, prompting you to create a presentation.
In order to import images from ARTstor into the OIV you will have to save some images on the ARTstor site into one or more groups. For more information on saving images to a group please see Using ARTstor for Students.
Once you have saved your selected images to a group, go to the "Insert" menu and select "Image Group(s) from ARTstor". You will be prompted to enter in your log-in information again, and then there will be a list of your group folders. Select the folder that you would like to import and click "Open."
To import images that you have saved locally on your computer, again you'll need to go to the "Insert" menu, then select "Local image(s)" to see your computer directory. Locate the images or images you would like to import, select them, and click "Open."
TIP! - All images that are imported into the OIV are placed into the Image Palette which is located at the bottom section of the OIV application when it has been opened.
Image Presentations
You can use the OIV to view images several ways.
1. You can view images that you have imported as a stand alone image show without any creating any slides by going to the "View" menu and selecting "View Image Palette Presentation". This will open the images in a presentation with images only which can be controlled by the widget that appears in the upper left hand corner of the presentation area of the screen.
To zoom in on the image, simply click on the image and it will zoom in. To zoom back out, hold down the 'shift' key while you click on the image and it will zoom back down.
There is also a button in the middle area of the Image Palette tool bar that will start a image presentation in the same way.
2. You can also create a presentation that works more like PowerPoint and has slides that can be edited with text and images. To create a slides or slides using images in your Image Palette, select the images you want to be slides (holding down the shift key to select more than one) by clicking on them.
Once you have selected the images, click on the 5th button from the left in the Image Palette tool bar that says "Create slides from selected images" when you roll over it. A dialog box will appear with all of the layout options available for the slides, that you can then select.
You may also create a slide first without any selected images and then drag the images you would like in that slide up from the Image Palette.
TIP! - Unlike PowerPoint, the OIV does not default with a blank slide open when you first begin the program. If you have imported images without creating a new presentation, you will need to create slides in order to place the images in the main area of the OIV for presentation and editing. Once you have chosen to create a slide (with the many different layout options) you can simply drag images from your Image Palette onto the slide and edit it in the main area of the OIV.
Upgrading Your Account with Instructor Privileges
What Do Instructor Privileges Allow Me to Do?
With Instructor Privileges in ARTstor you will have the flexibility to create: 1. Shared Folders - folders of images that you can have students and/or other ARTstor users access with a password created by you
2. Add Instructor Commentary to Images - this allows you to add commentary to a saved image and share it with other ARTstor users.
3. Create and Manage a Personal Collection - allows you to upload your personal images and audio files to the ARTstor online application so they can search and browse their own collection along side with the ARTstor collection.
For more detailed information and "how-to's" on Instructor Privileges visit the Instructor Level Functionssection of the ARTstor help area.
To obtain Instructor Level Privileges you must be logged into your ARTstor account. Once logged in, you will see a link that says "Edit my profile" in the welcome banner in the upper right hand of the screen. When you click on that link a pop up will appear that gives you several options for editing your profile (such as changing your password and default display options). One of the tabs in the pop up window is labeled "Instructor Privileges". This tab give the information for the contact at the library that can provide you with the authorization code and password that you will need to obtain the privileges. Once you obtain that information, enter it into the appropriate areas on the pop up, click save and you will be good to go!
TIP! - All ARTstor images and image groups have a stable URL associate with them. This allows you to embed links to the images and image groups in any type of document (such as a Word document, PowerPoint, or even Blackboard). For more information see the Integrating ARTstor with Coursewarehandout available on the ARTstor site.
